An XPN Welcomes Event

Jeff Mangum (neutral milk hotel)
Special Guest: Tall Firs

Jeff Mangum is perhaps best known for being the lyricist, vocalist and guitarist of the band Neutral Milk Hotel, and as a co-founder of The Elephant 6 Recording Company. His distinctive voice – gruff, melancholy and powerful – is the first thing that strikes you at hearing Neutral Milk Hotel.

Neutral Milk Hotel was born after the end of Synthetic Flying Machine, with an original lineup of Will Cullen Hart and Bill Doss on guitar and bass and Jeff Mangum on drums. Around 1995, Mangum left to focus on his own songs and after a year of intensive songwriting, released Neutral Milk Hotel’s debut album, On Avery Island, consisting mostly of Mangum and Robert Schneider (co-founder of Elephant 6 Recording studio) playing with friends. He expanded the lineup of Neutral Milk Hotel and in 1998, released In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

Mangum disbanded Neutral Milk Hotel in 1998, occasionally playing acoustic sets, and concentrating more on recorded sound and music collages. Over those years, he contributed to others’ albums, put out a live album, Live at Jittery Joe’s and hosted several radio shows. He began performing live again in 2001 and, among many other shows, performed several songs for the protesters participating in Occupy Wall Street.
