Education & Outreach
As part of the Strand-Capitol’s ongoing commitment to arts and education, the organization is dedicated to developing innovative community partnerships, which offer opportunities to enrich the community through arts and cultural programming.
In 2011, the Strand-Capitol partnered with New Hope Academy Charter School to develop a joint program to launch the New Hope School of the Arts. The program provides a stage for students (grades nine through twelve) from across York County to learn about music, dance, performance, production and technical aspects of theatre management. The New Hope School of the Arts houses all of its administration, classes and performances at the Strand-Capitol, presenting students with a rich and balanced performing arts curriculum in a professional theatre setting.
The Strand-Capitol also offers Day at the Strand for York County elementary classes. The program, designed to enrich the arts programming in schools, utilizes professional artists and performers to introduce students (grades one through three) to the performing arts. As part of the program, children come to the Strand and participate in activities focused on film, theater, music, dance, poetry and the visual arts. In addition to helping the students identify their passion, the goal is to help foster a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
The organization also partners with area non-profits and other arts providers to present programming designed to offer greater community access to a range of cultural experiences. Among the programs presented is Jazz in the City, a partnership with Downtown Inc and the City of York that brings quality jazz performances to the Strand Studio each First Friday.
